At least three people have died and several others have been injured in the German city of Solingen, where a knife-wielding attacker, who appeared to be of Arab descent according to witnesses, randomly attacked people at a downtown festival. The perpetrator fled the scene and is being pursued by the police with a large deployment. Investigators are treating the incident as a terrorist attack.
Update: According to information provided by the police on Saturday morning, in addition to the three fatalities, eight people were injured, five of them seriously. The terrorist has not been apprehended yet. The police are urging the public to share any videos or photos taken at the scene.
Earlier reports stated that multiple people died in the city of Solingen, Germany. A knife attacker targeted people celebrating the 650th anniversary of the city’s founding on the street on Friday evening, injuring many and causing several deaths.
The Bild newspaper reported that the attacker randomly targeted pedestrians with a knife.
Following the attack in the city center, the suspect, described by witnesses as looking of Arab descent, fled the scene, prompting a large-scale search by the police. Later reports mentioned that at least three people died in the attack and four others were injured. The incident occurred at a festival in the city square, where a concert was taking place at the time of the attack.
Shortly after the incident, multiple armored vehicles arrived on the scene accompanied by police helicopters, and the area of the attack was cordoned off. Residents were advised to stay indoors and avoid going outside.
Philipp Müller, one of the festival’s organizers, mentioned that doctors were fighting for the lives of nine individuals at the scene. While the participants were shocked by the events, there was no panic and they left the area in an organized manner.
According to information from Bild, investigators are treating the incident as a terrorist attack.
The city’s mayor, Tim Kurzbach, described the evening as shocking and horrific in a message posted on his Facebook page. He stated that the city’s residents had wanted to celebrate together, but instead they are now mourning the dead and injured.
A witness who was only meters away from the attack told the local newspaper Solinger Tageblatt that he was watching the concert when he noticed a strange look on the singer’s face, and shortly after, a person fell to the ground. He thought the person was simply drunk, but soon others also fell to the ground and large pools of blood began to appear around them.
