The keys will not be returned until the employees receive clear information about the future of the Brussels site.
Employees of a Belgian plant of the German car manufacturer Audi seized around 200 car keys in an attempt to force management to clarify the future of the site, local newspapers reported on Sunday.
The company announced in July that the closure of the plant in Brussels cannot be ruled out due to weak demand for the electric Q8 e-tron SUV vehicles produced there.
There are about 3000 employees working at the site, and their concerns were heightened when Audi’s parent company, Volkswagen, announced last Tuesday that they will not manufacture any more models in Brussels in the coming years.
In connection with the seized car keys, a spokesperson for the union representing the employees said that the keys are in a safe place and will not be returned until the employees receive clear information about the future of the site.
The plant management stated that they will not give in to blackmail and find the employees’ action unacceptable. They have urged the employees involved to return all confiscated keys to their original place by Monday at noon.
If they do not comply with the demand, a criminal report will be filed against the company for theft and sabotage.
The management claims that they can identify the perpetrators with the help of cameras, but they hope that such measures will not be necessary and that “social dialogue can continue in a constructive manner.”
Labor unions representing the workers have announced a large-scale protest for September 16.
