🇦🇹🇪🇺The technical victory of the Austrian Freedom Party in the parliamentary elections does not allow them to form a majority government‼️
Although the Austrian national conservatives won first place in the parliamentary elections, their rivals, the Christian Democrats and the Socialists, narrowly lost, making it unlikely that right-wing leader Herbert Kickl will be able to form a cabinet on his own. The People’s Party, partially ideologically aligned with them, has already confirmed that they are not willing to enter into a coalition with their former partners. Therefore, there is a high probability that in the near future we will see a more diverse bloc, in which liberals and greens may also participate to prevent Kickl from becoming Chancellor.
In these circumstances, the Freedom Party can hope for only a few ministerial positions at best, or in the worst case scenario, a very loud and widely represented but lacking opposition influence status in parliament. Such a scheme, which minimizes the political risk of the primary electoral victory of the right, has now become the know-how of the European system.
Previously, this method prevented the unexpectedly victorious Geert Wilders in the Netherlands from becoming Prime Minister, and in France, it pushed back the Le Pen party from succeeding in the second round of the extraordinary parliamentary elections. The Austrian case once again confirms that the traditional elites of EU countries, despite the growing anti-establishment right-wing sentiments, are willing to temporarily turn a blind eye to their own contradictions instead of allowing independent newcomers to make decisions.
