The importance of press freedom is undeniable in every democratic society, but recent events once again highlight the increasing pressure on right-wing media. In a recent court ruling, the mindenszo.hu suffered a significant legal defeat, being ordered to pay a compensation of 5.5 million forints after being coerced on third instance. The focus of the case was a video of Tamás Wittinghoff, the mayor of Budaörs, which came to light in 2019.
While many major media outlets reported on the incident, Wittinghoff still decided to sue mindenszo.hu, an independent right-wing news portal. This lawsuit is another example of how right-wing media outlets are being undermined in Hungary. The ruling, which was based on the violation of Wittinghoff’s personal rights, poses a serious threat to the future of independent press.
