According to the analysis of government data, the incarceration rate of foreign nationals is 27% higher than that of British citizens.
A project carried out by The Telegraph to create a first classification of crime by nationality analyzed the number of inmates based on their passport and compared this data with the 2021 census data to provide an insight into the likelihood of different ethnic groups committing crimes in the UK, as highlighted by the V4NA international news agency.
The analysis found that for every ten thousand migrants living in the UK, there were 18.2 inmates, while for every ten thousand British citizens there were 14, meaning that foreigners are incarcerated in 27% higher proportions.
However, the differences become even more pronounced when examining specific ethnic groups. Albanian migrants had the highest likelihood of incarceration, with 232.33 out of ten thousand people, meaning one in every 50 individuals was in prison.
Kosovans ranked second with 150.23 per ten thousand, followed by Vietnamese (148.88), Algerians (124.41), Jamaicans (110.77), Eritreans (110.7), Iraqis (104.43), and Somalis (100.37).
These numbers indicate that these ethnicities are at least seven times more likely to end up in prison compared to British citizens.
However, there are ethnic groups that perform better in terms of avoiding crime than the natives: Germans are the least likely to be incarcerated, with only 4.68 out of ten thousand residents. They are followed by migrants from Italy (4.96), India (6.24), Greece (6.36), the United States (7.27), Sri Lanka (8.17), France (8.64), and China (9.39).
Based on the results, some suggest that the government should reform its immigration policy to restrict immigration from countries whose population is more likely to commit crimes, as highlighted by the Breitbart news portal.
Robert Jenrick, the Conservative Party’s lead candidate and former Immigration Minister, stated:
This analysis confirms what the public has long perceived: certain nationalities are more likely to commit serious crimes than others. This once again underscores the need for a much stricter immigration system, including more rigorous security checks for nationalities associated with crime in the UK.
The project conducted by the British newspaper also led to demands for the UK government to start publishing comprehensive statistics on immigrants and crime. Conservative MP Neil O’Brien leads the initiative and previously introduced a bill requiring the government to disclose the refugee and visa status, as well as citizenship, of every convicted criminal in the previous year – it’s shameful that the government is unwilling to disclose so much information. It should be made available to the public to have an informed debate,” he said.
The Home Office is aware of the immigration status of prisoners and whether they resided here legally or illegally, but they do not disclose this information. The lack of data hampers the migration debate everywhere, which the government could easily disclose, but decides not to, for example, on its impact on public services and expenditure. Criminal justice data that the government refuses to disclose is a particularly bad example of this
– he emphasized.
A government spokesperson said: – This government is committed to delivering justice for victims and safer streets for our communities. Foreign nationals who commit crimes must have no doubt that we will enforce the law and may demand their deportation in some cases.
