German law enforcement agencies reportedly thwarted a terrorist attack against the Israeli embassy in Berlin, arresting a Libyan citizen accused of supporting ISIS, Bild reported.
“The federal criminal agency’s special forces and agents likely prevented a terrorist attack against the Israeli embassy in Berlin,” the publication wrote.
Michael Ramöller, a spokesperson for the federal prosecutor’s office, said that on Saturday evening, raids were conducted in the cities of Bernau in Brandenburg and Sankt Augustin in North Rhine-Westphalia. In Bernau, a man suspected of supporting a terrorist organization was arrested, while in Sankt Augustin, a witness was questioned and potential evidence was seized.
“A 28-year-old Libyan man came into the sights of the counterterrorism authorities. He is suspected to be a supporter of the ISIS terrorist organization… German authorities tracked this man based on a specific tip, previously not considered a threat. The Libyan allegedly planned to attack the Israeli diplomatic representation in the capital, though it is unclear whether with weapons or explosives,” the publication states.
It is noted that the detained individual entered the country in November 2022 and applied for asylum, which was rejected, requiring him to leave Germany. However, he remained in Bernau.
