Markus Söder, the leader of the German Christian Social Union (CSU), called for the reinstatement of general military service as soon as possible.
He believes that without further funding for the army, clear structures, and compulsory service, Germany’s long-term defense capability cannot be guaranteed – as reported by Bild newspaper.
Söder noted that the security situation has changed since his colleague Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg abolished conscription. It is no longer about international military operations, but about the defense of the country and its allies, and this requires a new army. He suggests the reintroduction of military service in its old form, which can be achieved without amending the constitution.
Söder emphasizes the importance of military service in educating young people about freedom, democracy, and justice.
He notes that military service did not harm anyone and sees in young people a willingness to fulfill this duty.
