How well do we understand the one sentence that Gyula Illyés wrote about tyranny! Today, there are several generations who grew up in a free world, but they can also feel this poem. But would they understand if someone wrote that where there is freedom, there is God?
Idolizing Freedom
Many people think that they become free by breaking their connection with God. They create an idol of freedom for themselves. Their freedom is only apparent freedom, because God sustains every living being. God awakens every love in the heart.
When we ask them what freedom is good for them, they never talk about the essential goal of rebellion against God. They usually claim that God does not exist, and they find their freedom in going wherever they want. In a way, they indirectly reveal their big secret, that they rebel against boundaries. God sets limits for our actions. Let’s say, He restricts us, like people in houses with balconies: He does not allow our body and soul to suffer accidents.
The Desire for Freedom is a Desire for God
God affirms human freedom. He wants us to freely give ourselves to Him. Man is formed in relationship with God. The desire for freedom is a normal human desire. If we look at what it is directed towards, we realize that what we desire freedom for can only come about in relation to God.
Therefore, we can boldly say that a person longing for freedom is longing for God. But what happens when a whole nation wants to live in freedom?
In 1956
Hungarian history is full of struggles for our freedom. Did we always want to be free to make our decisions? Did we want to be free to trade? Did we want to be free so that we wouldn’t be robbed?
Yes and no. Freedom is a necessity for the Hungarian soul. To be free in free Hungary means more than rationality can comprehend. Freedom is the demand of the heart. And something else: in the struggles for freedom, love communities were always born, solidarity was achieved.
Sometimes
I remember a picture from 2006. A person stands with the Hungarian flag. The police are coming towards him, and it is certain that they will knock him down and take him to prison. But this man stands, because he wants freedom – not just for himself. This striving for freedom is loved by God, because it moves man out of his selfishness.
This was also the center of the miracle of the 1956 revolution. Freedom fighters did not just fight for themselves, but for every Hungarian. Therefore, freedom in its fullness is always a state of being realized for the joy of others.
Long live Hungarian freedom!
