Sahra Wagenknecht is campaigning for the cessation of weapons deliveries to Ukraine, with centrist parties fearing that the darling of the left will turn the referendum into a war referendum.
A peace initiative and the cessation of weapons deliveries are needed in Ukraine, with the slogan, “American missiles cannot be stationed in Germany,” Sahra Wagenknecht, founder and namesake of the newly formed but increasingly popular Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), started her election campaign in Saxony on Tuesday.
The left-wing politician’s campaign start was reported by Die Welt, according to the newspaper, the peace-oriented stance is a positive message for many listeners, as some Germans see the issue of war as the number one European political issue. Wagenknecht believes that European politicians are patting each other on the back for their solidarity with Ukraine, “so that people continue to die every day.”
According to the politician, showing solidarity with Ukraine would mean that EU leaders would do everything to end the war diplomatically.
BSW leader harshly criticized the centrist parties. She called the Greens “moral world champions,” whose “crazy eco-activism” is causing electricity and heating prices to rise.
The start of the politician’s campaign set off alarms for centrist parties, with the CDU stating that the regional elections in Saxony should be about the affairs of Saxony, not Germany’s foreign policy.
Thuringia and Saxony will vote for new regional governments on September 1, and Brandenburg on September 22. According to surveys, Michael Kretschmer’s CDU leads with 33%, closely followed by the AfD with 30%, while the BSW is at 13%.
