Carpe Deum: Elválasztható-e egymástól a szexualitás és a termékenység?

What is green sex? Why is sexuality more than just losing virginity? Why is the use of condoms and pills contrary to the teachings of the church? Which contraception methods are compatible with Christian moral teaching? These and similar questions are discussed by Andrea Földi-Kovács in the latest episode of Carpe Deum.

Green sex is one of the newest but growing trends. In short, it means an environmentally friendly sexual life that prefers committed, monogamous relationships and natural family planning methods (e.g. FAM or NFP) over hormonal contraceptives and condoms. This reduces the harmful effects of synthetic hormones and plastics on the environment, such as water pollution, and contributes to the establishment of stable family relationships that can have positive effects on society and the environment.

But if synthetic hormones have a negative impact on the environment and the surrounding wildlife, why do we not question how they affect us?

The widespread use of hormonal pills to control fertility has still unforeseeable consequences. The appearance of contraception has made fertility predictable. Women can control when and how many times they conceive a child. Aside from accidents, as nature does not like to be manipulated, writes Constanza Miriano.

When we separate sex from babies, we are also separating it from marriage – both in principle and in practice, argues West. By forcefully interfering with the order of nature, we are essentially undermining ourselves.

Engaging in sex (even with protection) could mean the beginning of a new life, which is intended to be passed on. “Since the act of love was separated from the transmission of life, sexuality has degraded from an adventurous and bold act to a sad and cowardly gesture.” – writes Constanza Miriano, an Italian journalist.

God ordained sexuality for marriage and tied it to a lifelong commitment based on love. Because He knew we are vulnerable in intimacy, that the perfection of total bodily self-giving is not about maximizing pleasure for ourselves, but about self-giving rooted in love. This way, the dignity of man and woman remains inviolable even in sexuality.

Let us therefore act responsibly towards our own fertility and accept that God has the final say in the life of every conceived child, over which we have no control, even if we try to convince ourselves otherwise.
