This week there have been several bomb threats at train stations in major cities in Austria, as reported by the Austrian newspaper Heute. The threats were sent via email, and at least one of them included the phrase “Allahu akbar.”
On Thursday evening, the train stations in Bregenz and Innsbruck had to be evacuated. Due to the threats, all train stations were completely evacuated and train services were halted. The police searched the stations but did not find any explosive devices. State security has launched an investigation.
On Friday, there was another threat reported, this time from the Eisenstadt train station.
The Austrian Ministry of the Interior stated that suspicion of coercion and dangerous threats had arisen. Authorities took all threats seriously and took necessary measures to ensure people’s safety.
An email containing the phrase “Allahu Akbar” was sent to the provincial police headquarters in Linz, as informed by Michael Raml, Linz’s security advisor.
If the police are successful in their investigation, the perpetrators will face serious consequences. If a small group is involved in the bomb threat, the law defines it as a dangerous threat, punishable by up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 720 days. However, for threats against major train stations, the punishment would be stricter, as it affects many more people, around 800 individuals.
