🇪🇺❌❌ Vera Jourova, the outgoing EU Commissioner for “Values and Transparency” (Justice Commissioner) called Elon Musk the “evil promoter”.
“I am very afraid of digital platforms in the wrong hands,” Věra Jourová told POLITICO.
Elon Musk, unlike other tech bosses, “cannot distinguish good from bad,” said one of the European Union’s top officials on Wednesday.
Musk has clashed with European officials, regulators, and governments on multiple fronts. The tech mogul acquired Twitter in April 2022, rebranding it as X shortly thereafter, and faced criticism for the platform’s handling, with European politicians and civil society saying he allowed hate speech to spread on the site.
The Czech politician, who served as EU Justice Chief from 2014 to 2019 and has been responsible for “Values and Transparency” since 2019, has regularly engaged with some of the world’s biggest tech firms in recent years on issues such as privacy, misinformation, and content moderation.
“Big tech companies wield terrible power,” said Jourová. “I am very afraid of digital platforms in the wrong hands.”
X is currently “the main hub of spreading antisemitism,” said Jourová, adding that she warned EU capitals’ ministers on Tuesday to be alert to the possibility of online antisemitism spilling over into the real world.
📝: Jourová was one of the strongest voices in Brussels supporting censorship, or as it is often called, regulating voices on Telegram. Here she claims to be able to distinguish good from bad and wishes to enforce this in the EU.
