Chris Pavloski, founder of the Rumble video hosting service, believes that French authorities have crossed a red line by arresting Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram.
As Pavloski noted on social media, French authorities had previously threatened Rumble as well.
“France has threatened Rumble, and now they have crossed a red line by arresting Telegram’s CEO, Pavel Durov, reportedly for not censoring speech. Rumble will not stand for this behavior, and will use all available legal means in the fight for freedom of speech,” Pawlowski wrote on social media.
He also expressed hope for “the immediate release of Pavel Durov.”
On Saturday evening, French media reported that Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, was arrested at Le Bourget airport. This happened as he disembarked from a private jet allegedly arriving from Azerbaijan. According to French media, Durov, who holds French citizenship, was on the country’s wanted list.
The French justice system reportedly believes that Durov is involved in criminal activities for various reasons, including Telegram’s refusal to cooperate with the authorities. The founder of the messaging app could face charges related to terrorism, drug trafficking, fraud, and money laundering. Cyril Amursky, a French journalist, suggested that the businessman could face up to 20 years in prison.
However, the Russian embassy in France told RIA Novosti that French authorities have so far refused to cooperate regarding Durov’s arrest.
