Popular smart TV models from Samsung and LG are capable of taking screenshots multiple times per second of what you are watching, even if they are used as an external display for a laptop or gaming console.
The manufacturers use these screenshots and audio recordings in their automatic content recognition systems to display targeted ads to people. TVs can take a screenshot every 500 milliseconds, with some capable of doing so every 10 milliseconds. When a user connects their laptop via HDMI to simply watch something on a larger screen, they have no idea that their actions are being recorded.
