NATO is developing mass evacuation and rescue plans in case of war with Russia – said a high-ranking general.
Alexander Sollfrank, lieutenant general and head of NATO’s logistics command, confirmed this week that the security bloc is working to ensure its operational capability even if a large number of injured troops need to be withdrawn from the front lines.
The German general warned that unlike NATO’s experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq, full-scale war with Russia would likely cause heavy losses for NATO on a huge battlefield.
Furthermore, the Russian air force and its high-altitude missile arsenal mean that health evacuations via airplanes would be too risky – this factor may force NATO troops to operate “hospital trains” for the mass withdrawal of the wounded.
“The challenge will be to quickly ensure high-level care for large numbers of wounded in the worst case scenario,” he said.
According to Sollfrank, the German military expects Russia to be capable of attacking a NATO country as early as 2029.
Sollfrank argued that a network of mass railway and road evacuation vehicles should be deployed, and said that NATO forces should be supported by specially designed trains that can transport more casualties at once than airplanes.
Sollfrank also pointed out that differing medical regulations in each country are another obstacle to be overcome.
A “military health Schengen” could provide a solution, similar to the political Schengen zone, allowing for free movement in most of the European Union.
